WEEKLY FREIGHT FLIGHTS ANNOUNCED TO HONG KONG

The Palaszczuk Government has today welcomed the announcement that the Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport, Toowoomba, has secured a deal for a weekly Cathay Pacific freight flight to Hong Kong.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Trade and Investment Jackie Trad said the announcement demonstrated the strength of Queensland’s agricultural export sector.

“I would like to wholeheartedly congratulate Brisbane West Wellcamp and Wagners on this fantastic initiative for the Darling Downs and Toowoomba region,” Ms Trad said.

“This announcement is a clear endorsement of the ever-increasing export opportunities for our Queensland agricultural producers and exporters who now have a direct line to one of our region’s most lucrative markets.

“The emerging Asian middle-class is driving up demand for clean, green produce and Queensland is perfectly placed to capitalise on this demand, delivering jobs and economic growth right throughout Queensland.

“The Palaszczuk Government is committed to driving opportunities for our exporters which is why in May this year we declared the Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport a strategic airport to support its growth.”

Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries Leanne Donaldson said that the announcement would support local producers.

“The practical effect of this announcement is that producers in the Darling Downs and Toowoomba can now export their fresh produce directly from the region in which it was produced,” Ms Donaldson said.

“On my recent trade mission to Hong Kong it was clear that there is a significant appetite for Queensland products and this announcement will help our farmers to take advantage of this demand and increase efficiency.”

In announcing the news Global Chairman of Wagners and airport developer John Wagner said the announcement was a coup for local producers.

“We are absolutely delighted Cathay Pacific has committed to operating a scheduled weekly service out of the airport,” Mr Wagner said.

“The opportunities this creates for Queensland exporters to access the world’s biggest consumer markets are unlimited.”

The service will be operated on a Cathay Pacific 747-8F. Menzies Aviation, in partnership with Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport, will manage the ground handling and cargo terminal operations.

Get Your Capability Statement

A Capability Statement Writing Workshop, facilitated by Department of State Development, was held on 23 September 2016 and was attended by 15 local business representatives, who gained knowledge on the preparation of a good capability statement, and its value for winning tenders for major projects.

This was an opportune time, given the upcoming AGL Wind Farm project.

A capability statement outlines capabilities and skills of your business. It is a tool that allows procurement teams to assess its expertise, achievements and potential to deliver goods and services. A capability statement is essential for participating and securing tendering opportunities in government and private sector projects, including sub-contractor work.

If you would like assistance to develop a capability statement, please contact Sharyn Garrett on 4189 9173 or email sgarrett@southburnett.qld.gov.au

We are continuing to liaise with TSBE on the potential for other opportunities for local suppliers, and of course we are only too happy to share the information on what our local suppliers can do.

Details from AGL Local Supplier Requirements

South Burnett Directions hosted an information session on the Coopers Gap Wind Farm Development Proposal with AGL.  The purpose of this session was to assist local suppliers wishing to participate in this opportunity to understand what is required.

Over 40 people attended the first AGL information session outlining the scope and timing of the AGL wind farm project, and what is required by businesses wishing to gain work out of this opportunity.

To ensure local contractors and suppliers are considered, they need to be proactive in their approach to securing work with the EPC contractor, once awarded.  To support local businesses with this, in addition to hosting more information sessions, South Burnett Directions will be assisting with developing capability statements and increasing our intelligence on local suppliers and what they can do.

The development is expected to commence construction in the second half of 2017, although tenders will be potentially be sought from the principal contractor late October.  Local suppliers wishing to tender will need to start preparing now.

What does the Major project sector seek in local suppliers?

They must meet these minimum requirements:

  • Prequalification when requested
  • Quality – a system or accreditation
  • Financial Capability & Insurances
  • Project Readiness or Evidence of track record
  • WHS&E Management Plan
  • Tendering credentials
  • Additional requirements of significant sub-contractors:
  • Industrial Relations
  • Resource Availability – the ability to ramp up quickly!

We are liaising with AGL regarding the opportunities, and if you think your business may be able to benefit from this opportunity, please contact South Burnett Directions on 4189 9538.
